CAPT. A. P. GILMER DEAD: Dies At Home Of Son-In-Law In Lebanon: Capt.
A. P. Gilmer was born near Hansonville, Va., October 18th, 1846, and
died at the home of his son-in-law, Walter P. Gray, in Lebanon,
September 25th, 1909, aged 62 years, 11 months and 7 days. Mr. Gilmer
had been a citizen of Loudon county for the past eight years and had
returned to Russell only one week prior to his death. In the spring of
1861 he raised a company of reserves from 16 to 20 years old and was
elected Captain of Company B., of a regiment of reserves and
participated in the fight at Saltville, Va., in December, 1864. His
company was in the thickest of that battle and no company distinguished
themselves with more bravery than Captain Gilmer and his command. The
company sustained a heavy loss in killed and captured, but the remainder
came out as heroes. At the surrender, Captain Gilmer returned home and
engaged in farming and was a model citizen. He never spoke harshly of
any one, his whole life was blameless and in every relation of life was
a true devoted christian gentle man. He was an exemplary member of the
M. E. Church South. He leaves a devoted wife and six children, Mrs. E.
T. Hevener of Monterey, Va., Mrs. R. Walter Gose and Mrs. G. Cowan Gose,
of Castlewood, Va., and Mrs. Walter P. Gray of Lebanon, Mr. Marion C.
Gilmer of Chicago, and Dr. Walter S. Gilmer, now attending University
Medical College of Richmond, to mourn the loss of an affectionate
husband and dutiful father. The interment took place in the family plot
near Hansonville, Va., Sunday afternoon to await the resurrection of the
